We were the only Indians amongst the 2,000 guests from 36 countries that celebrated the winners of the iF DESIGN AWARD 2018 at the iF Design Award night held at BMW Welt in Munich recently. This internationally renowned prize for outstanding design has been awarded for 65 years and the iF Design Award night has become one of the most significant international design events in recent years. Guests from the fields of design, business, culture, politics and media come together to honor the winners of this prestigious award.
A total of 6,402 entries from 54 countries registered for the competition in various design disciplines. Like last year, India managed to get four awards. Though Asia accounts for an increasing share of the awards every year, India seems to be lagging way behind. Design in Asia is being led by China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. Good and ready design talent backed by manufacturing expertise has already made China a design powerhouse. There is still a lot for India to learn and do.
While we in India take great pride in our heritage and culture, there is now a lot of noise about innovation and development. We must learn to make the most of the opportunity the design industry is offering the world. For a long time now the world has been waiting for the Indian design wave to come. I think it’s time to change the focus from design to manufacturing…that can perhaps bring India some more awards. There has to be an organized effort on our part to participate in International Awards. This should be taken as a matter of national prestige. India definitely deserves a greater presence on the world stage.
